Boards Wales newsletter – October 2025

Blog post

This month I reflect on good and bad leadership, inspired by reading a few articles about it. Also – and this is not going to surprise most of you – there are plenty of examples of bad leadership in Wales. Not that I want to heap criticism on any individual, but it shows collectively that we need to ‘up our game’ in governance. On the plus side, it’s never been easier to seek out examples of good practice, and there’s also plenty of support for organisations that accept the need for improvement.

Event – co-production of the public appointments process, 5 November

If you’ve got an interest in making Wales better, how about shaping the way public appointments are made? The event is being held at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, from 0930-1530. You can register to attend here or here.

Apart from helping Welsh Government with the public appointments process, it will doubtless be a brilliant opportunity to network with other people who are interested in governance in Wales. I look forward to seeing you there 🤝

Event – portfolio life in the public sector, 29 October

Not specifically one for Welsh governance, but featuring contributions from Carys Williams who is the lead NED for Welsh Government, this online event should give insights into how to achieve good balance between your roles. More information here.

And finally….

Like many people I have been experimenting with AI. It is extremely useful in some places, but I have decided not in drafting or ‘improving’ my blog posts. Whilst it certainly cuts down the time to prepare a blog post by 90%, I learn very little by using it in this way. In a world deluged by crap AI posts on social media and blogs, I have decided to keep this website an ‘AI-free zone’ from now on. It will just be the free thoughts of me, and anybody else who would like to write a guest blog (the invitation for that is open!)
